The Billy Joe Athay Award is the highest award a club member can receive.

We held the first annual Davidson County Woodcarvers show in Oct. of 1991. This was the first time the Billy Joe Athay Award was given. The award was established by the club to honor Billy Joe (A gifted local carver) for the inspiration he provided. The award goes to the carver who has done the most for the club that year. Sadly Billy Joe passed away in July of 1992, just two months before the second show. The Billy Joe Athay Award is still presented each year in his honor by his widow, Jean Athay Parlier.

Each year the winner of the Billy Joe Athay Award is added to this Awards Plaque. This plaque was carved by the club members shortly after the club was created in 1990. Even Billy Joe Athay helped carve the plaque.
