Wayne Covert

Club Founder

Wayne has been interested in working with wood as long as he can remember. While attending Lexington’s famous Barbeque Festival in 1989, he stopped to look at wood carvings by the Tarheel Woodcarvers Club. A Gentleman by the name of Billy Jo Athay was so kind in answering all Wayne’s questions. Billy Jo planted a seed that day that will live on for centuries. Not long after speaking with Billy Jo, Wayne saw an ad in our local newspaper that read, “Have you ever wanted to carve a duck?” He signed up that day at the local community college and the rest is history. Wayne had a dream of starting a wood carving club in Lexington. Along with his wife, Dottie, and a couple of good friends, the Davidson County Woodcarving Association began with nine members in 1990, eager to learn the art of wood carving. With these nine club members, and a lot of faith and hard work, the Davidson County Woodcarvers’ held their first Show and Competition in 1991, in conjunction with our annual Barbeque Festival. This year, 2007, we’ll host our 16th Show and Competition. The club decided to hold a contest in hopes of designing a logo for the newly formed club. Wayne was so proud to have won this honor and you can view his design on the home page of this website. Wayne was also blessed to be the only club member to receive the Billy Joe Athay Award that was presented by Billy Jo. It’s a special memory that Wayne is so proud of. Wayne feels so blessed to be a part of this wonderful organization.
